Germany is set to hold a national final to select its artist and song for the next Eurovision in February 2027, according to German Eurovision news outlet ESC Kompakt.

What do we know so far?

Not many details have been shared yet. SWR, which organizes the German national finals, has shared a document with potential participants in the selection process that confirms the timeframe for the selection. According to this document, Germany’s 2027 national final is set to be held on a Saturday in February. The application deadline to participate is September 21, and a “music team” of five members will review the submissions and decide who advances to the second round of the process. In this round, a panel of international music and Eurovision experts will evaluate the songs and make recommendations to SWR, which will then select the songs that will compete at the national final in February.

Other details, including the title of the national selection, its structure, and the voting method, are yet to be shared.

Germany’s selection for Eurovision 2026

On February 28, 2026, Germany held Das Deutsche Finale, hosted by Barbara Schöneberger and Hazel Brugger, to select the artist and song that would represent the country in Vienna. Nine songs participated in the first round, with three being selected by a 20-member international jury to advance to the superfinal. In it, the public voted for its favorite song: “Fire” by Sarah Engels.

Germany’s Eurovision journey

In 1956, Germany made their debut in the Eurovision Song Contest, where Walter Andreas Schwarz performed the song “Im Wartesaal zum großen Glück”. Since their debut, Germany has participated 69 times, being in the final 68 times, and has won the contest on two occasions: in 1982 with “Ein bißchen Frieden” by Nicole and in 2010 with “Satellite” by Lena.

In 2026, Germany selected Sarah Engels to represent the country in Vienna with “Fire”. Being part of the Big 5, Germany automatically qualified for the final, where Sarah would ultimately finish in 23rd place with 12 points, all of which came from the jury.
