Cypriot broadcaster CyBC has reportedly started investigating a possible change to its Eurovision selection method. It is believed a national final may be brought in for 2027.
What do we know so far?
According to Cypriot women’s news portal ilovestyle, which claims to have had access to exclusive information, the country is considering changing its selection method for next year’s Eurovision in Burgas, no longer selecting its artist internally:
According to exclusive information from ilovestyle, a production company has submitted a proposal to the Cyprus Competitions and Exhibitions Commission, aiming to fully undertake both the organization and the cost of a television process to select the next representative of Cyprus in the competition.
The site further claims that the company is in discussions with the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency, and that the proposal is currently examined by the authorities.
Which selection method has been more successful?
Our of the 42 times that Cyprus has participated, the country selected its artist through a national final 23 times, the most recent one being in 2015. Since then, Cyprus’s selections have all been internal. Its best result came in 2018, when Eleni Foureira came in 2nd place in 2018 with “Fuego”, which was selected internally. Other successful internal selections include Cyprus’s 2002 song “Gimme”, which finished 6th. Overall, however, songs chosen through a national final have placed higher at Eurovision. Examples include “Sti Fotia” in 1995 (9th place), “Mana Mou” in 1997 (5th place) and “Stronger Every Minute” in 2004 (5th place).
Cyprus’s Eurovision journey
Cyprus made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981, where the island nation participated with the song “Monika” and place 6th. Since then, Cyprus has participated 42 times (33 of which where they qualified for the Grand Final).
For 2026, CyBC internally selected Antigoni to represent them in Vienna with the song “JALLA”. Competing in the second semi-final, Cyprus managed to qualify for the final, ultimately finishing in 19th place with 75 points. Thirty-four points came from the televote, while the remaining 41 came from the jury.
