Kazakhstan’s potential Eurovision participation

According to the reponse of the Minister of Culture and Information Arman Kyrykbayev to an inquiry by esc_kaz, Kazakhstani broadcaster Khabar Agency has applied for full EBU membership in an attempt to join Eurovision 2027.

Earlier this month, Kazakhstani news outlet BES.media reported that the Ministry of Culture and Information has still not decided whether the country will participate in the 2027 edition of Eurovision. As a result, information such as the broadcaster and the application and song selection processses is still not known. However, Minister of Culture and Information Kyrykbayev does not rule out participation yet, noting that he will continue to monitor the inetrnational agenda while taking into account state priorities, organizational capabilities and financial resources.

Previous attempts to join the contest

This is not the first time that talks about Kazakhstan’s debut at Eurovision take place. In 2025, Kemelbek Oishybayev, Chairman of the Kazakhstani broadcaster Khabar Agency, discussed with the EBU the possibility of the country’s participation in the contest. The following year, Kazakhstan also attempted to join Eurovision but did not receive an invitation from the EBU’s Reference Group.

Kazakhstan’s Eurovision journey

Kazakhstan has been an associate member of the EBU since 2016, but it cannot become a full member due to not having enough territory within the European Broadcasting Area. However, the country has previously participated in another Eurovision event: the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Kazakhstan entered the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2018 and participated five times, with their most recent appearance in 2022. Their best results came in 2019, when Yerzhan Maksim placed 2nd, a result that was repeated in 2020 by Karakat Bashanova.
