Norway’s 2024 Eurovision participants and folk-metal legends Gåte are back with new music. The band have this week released full length album “Sigil”, following a string of singles in recent months.
About “Sigil”
Norwegian folk-metal band Gåte are back with new music. The band have released latest album “Sigil”. On the record, Gåte blend Nordic folklore, dark electronica and guitar-driven rock. Hardanger fiddle, nyckelharpa and hurdy-gurdy sounds play alongside electronic textures and heavy drums and guitar. The new record features recently released singles “Mi Jord” and “Oskorsreia”. “Jostedalsrypa,” a song based on the true story of a child who survived alone in the mountains after the Black Death, closes the album.
The record is in classic Gåte style – a mix of Nordic folk-metal, ancient folklore tales and traditional rock. Maria Franz of band Heilung guests on lead single “Sannsiger.” Further contributions come from Hardanger fiddle player Olav Mjelva. Nyckelharpa and hurdy-gurdy player John Stenersen, pianist Knut Anders Vestad and cellist Marit Aspås also appear on the album.
The new album is the first full length album from the band to be released on the Season of Mist metal label. “Sigil” was produced by Kristian Fanavold Tvedt and Magnus Børmark, recorded at MagnuStudio and Øra Studio, and mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios. Gåte are playing numerous shows in Norway throughout October and November and more information about upcoming dates can be found on their website.

Who are Gåte?
The band Gåte was founded in 1999 by the Sundli siblings. Gåte combine traditional Norwegian folk and explosive, progressive rock in their music, and found rapid success in a relatively short amount of time after first forming. Between 2001 and 2006 the band released two studio albums, two EPs and a live album, and performed countless live shows in and around Norway. Gåte won the Norwegian Grammy for Best New Artist in 2002.
Following a 12 year hiatus, Gåte returned to music in 2017. The band now consists of Gunnhild Sundli, Magnus Børmark, Jon Even Schärer, Mats Paulsen and John Stenersen. While the lineup of the band has changed over the years, Gåte’s focus on blending traditional Norwegian folk and spiritual music with progressive rock has not.
Gåte’s Eurovision history
The band Gåte entered the 2024 edition of Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix national final with their song “Ulveham”. After beating Eurovision superstars KEiiNO to win Melodi Grand Prix in 2024, Gåte won the right to represent their county at the Contest in Malmö.
Gåte performed in the second of the Semi-Finals at the Contest in Sweden, and qualified for the Grand Final. On the Saturday Grand Final in 2024, Norway would place 25th with Gåte, coming last place in of the 25 performing acts. The band would receive 16 points, 12 of which came from the jury, and 4 were awarded by the televote.
