🇩🇰 DR gives first details for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2027

Danish broadcaster DR is already preparing its national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2027 (DMGP 2027). DR is planning to modernize the show whilst keeping its traditional identity.

Searching in Denmark and beyond

At a fan-club meeting DR’s Grand Prix chief Erik Struve Hansen confirmed, that the broadcaster is currently looking for artists and songs. It was mentioned that the broadcaster is looking beyond Denmark for artists within the Danish Realm (Rigsfællesskabet). Good Evening Europe claims this could mean that a Greenlandic artist is among DK’s considered acts. After all DMGP had artists from Faroe Islands participate in the past. Hansen has already confirmed that a former DMGP participant from the past five years is returning. It has also been hinted that a musical-theatre performer will participate again. Possibly due to last year’s success of Søren Torpegaard Lund’s “Før vi går hjem” the amount of Danish songs increased.

The bigger strategy

DR is actively working on making Denmark a more consistently successful country at Eurovision. The ambition is to compete on a level similar to Sweden and Finland. Instead of simply receiving songs and then finding singers for them, DR is increasingly having songs written with particular artists in mind. They are approaching artists and their managers individually to gauge interest. They’re also looking at the entire TV production as a whole, not just the songs: staging, visuals. The broadcaster wants to make Melodi Grand Prix attractive to younger viewers without alienating longtime fans. At this point DR has no plans to bring back semifinals.

70 years of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix

2027 will be the 70th anniversary of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. DR is considering historical programming, potentially including a mini-series about the competition’s history, so the anniversary could be celebrated beyond just the televised final.

What is DMGP?

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix is the oldest national final in the Eurovision sphere. The national final has been going since Denmark’s debut in the contest back in 1957. There are often around 8 acts who take part in the national selection, and the same is true this year. The voting process has changed over the years but currently the winner is determined by 50% jury voting and 50% televoting. Denmark is one of a few countries to introduce a super-final round which narrows the artists down to three before deciding the final result. The DMGP final will this year take place on February 13th in the Sydbank Arena in Kolding.

Denmark’s Eurovision journey

Denmark first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1957 and notched up their first win in 1963 with Grethe and Jørgan Ingmann’s “Dansevise”. Denmark later earned two third-place finishes in 1988 and 1989 but was then relegated three times in 1994, 1996, and 1998. They finally achieved their second victory in 2000 with the Olsen Brothers’ “Fly on the Wings of Love”, and have missed the Grand Final eight times since the introduction of the semi-finals. A six-year qualification streak from 2008 culminated in its third win in 2013 with Emmelie de Forrest’s “Only Teardrops”.

Søren Torpegaard Lund won the right to represent Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2026 with “Før vi går hjem”. He qualified for the Grand Final and would eventually finish in 7th place, earning a total of 243 points. Of these 165 came from juries, while 78 came from the televote.
