With some broadcasters currently looking ahead to the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest. Some are thinking long-term and looking beyond that. George Arsenakos, the CEO of Panik Records, in an interview with OK! Greece, where he revealed that CyBC and Panik Records agreed that a talent show will be used to select Cyprus’ 2023 Eurovision Song Contest representative.
With the announcement of an upcoming talent show, if it proceeds, this will be the first time that Cyprus will be holding a national final. The last time CyBC undertook this was in 2015.
“I consider it a very strong prize, which will bring very good participations”
During the interview with OK! Greece, George Arsenakos, talked about his life, the beginning of Panik Records, as well as briefly mentioning the following about the record label’s involvement for Eurovision 2023 with Cyprus:
I can say that we as Panik have talked to RIK, the state channel of Cyprus, and we will take over the representation of the country in Eurovision in 2023. So whoever wins in the new talent show, which we are preparing, will represent Cyprus in Eurovision in 2023. I consider it a very strong prize, which will bring very good participations
The collaboration between Panik Records and CyBC has been consistent for the past few years, where for the past five years; four of Cyprus’s Eurovision entries (2017,2018,2020,2021) were released by the record company. At the time of writing, no details have been announced for the proposed talent show.
Cyprus’ Eurovision Journey
The Mediterranean nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981, where Island participated with the song “Monika” and place 6th. Since then, Cyprus has participated 37 times (31 of which where they were in the Grand Final).
In 2021, CyBC internally selected Elena Tsagrinou to represent them in Rotterdam with the song “El Diablo”. During their participation in Rotterdam, Elena qualified for the Grand Final, where she managed to place 16th overall, receiving 94 points from the Jury and Televoters.
