Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has announced that Jan Smit will return to the commentary box for the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest. He has commentated on the Dutch coverage since 2011 except for 2021, where he was part of the hosting team. Jan Smit will rejoin Cornald Maas, who has been part of the Dutch coverage since 2006.
“This is something I want to continue doing”
The announcement was made in a larger announcement confirming that Jan Smit has signed a new contract with broadcaster AVROTROS. Besides his Eurovision duties, Jan Smit will also continue his appearances and hostings of other AVROTROS shows. This includes shows such as Beste Zangers, TROS Muziekfeest, and the hosting of the TV Award ceremony Gouden Televizier-Ring Gala. Jan Smit expressed his delight at the contract extension, saying: “For many years, AVROTROS has given me the opportunity to present programs that give a platform to Dutch artists. Both established and new. That is something I want to continue doing and that I find important.” Jan Smit and his co-commentator Cornald Maas both took part in the committee that selected S10 as the Dutch representative for Eurovision 2022.
The Netherlands at Eurovision
The Netherlands is one of the founding countries of the ESC, having performed the very first song ever on the Eurovision stage back in 1956. While the result of βDe Vogels van Hollandβ is unknown, the Netherlands have clocked 5 wins, with their most recent in 2019. However the Netherlands is also known to have had the longest ever nonqualification streak in the semi-final era β they missed out on the final a whopping 8 times between 2005-2012. As the host of 2021, they automatically qualified to the final in Rotterdam. Their song βBirth of a New Ageβ reached 23rd place, with 11 points, all from the juries.
