It has been revealed by the official Eurovision Youtube channel that Iceland’s Sigga, Beta and Elín will compete under the name Systur. Systur won Söngvakeppnin with the song “Með hækkandi sól” and will represent Iceland at Eurovision 2022. The girls will perform in the second half of the first semi-final of Eurovision 2022 on May 10th.

Who are Systur?

Systur is made up of 3 actual sisters Sigga, Beta and Elín. The girls grew up in Vesturbær, which is a district in Iceland. They started releasing music back in 2011 under the name Sísý Ey, they have had some great successes even performing at Glastonbury festival in 2017. They have even showed off their love for Eurovision with their cover of Loreen’s “Euphoria”. Their only other song as a trio is called “Bounce From The Bottom” when they went under the name Tripolia.

Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest

Iceland debuted at Eurovision in 1986 with ICY and “Gleðibankinn”, which finished 16th with 19 points. Subsequently, Iceland has participated in Eurovision 33 times and earned 7 top-ten finishes. Iceland has yet to win the contest, but they have managed two runner-up results. The first came in 1999, with Selma Björnsdóttir’s “All of Out Luck”, and then in 2009 with Yohanna’s “Is It True?”. Daði og Gagnamagnið’s “Think About Things” was a favourite to win Eurovision before the EBU cancelled the 2020 contest.

Most recently, Daði og Gagnamagnið again represented Iceland at Eurovision 2021 with “10 Years”. They then finished in fourth place with 378 points. However, they could not perform in person due to a positive COVID-19 test. Instead, Iceland used footage from its second rehearsal as their entry.
