Today, rehearsals for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 are continuing. Countries rehearsing on Day 2 include Portugal, Croatia, Denmark, Austria, Greece, Iceland, Norway and Armenia. First to rehearse today was Portugal’s MARO .
MARO’s first rehearsal
The next act to take to the Eurovision 2022 stage at the Pala Alpitour in Turin was Portugals’s MARO. She will sing the song “saudade, saudade” at Eurovision 2022 after she was selected to represent Portugal earlier this year.
Following MARO’s first rehearsal a clip of their rehearsal was posted on TikTok. The clip showed the her before and after she took to the Eurovision stage for the first time. The clip also gave us some insight into how well here first rehearsal went.
What did we learn about MARO’s staging?

Performing first in today’s rehearsals, Portugal are making the most of the space on the stage. So much so that they are delivering their entire performance on the B-stage in front of the green room! All six girls – MARO and her backing vocalists – are arranged in a circle which reflects the intimacy and introversion of the song, whilst the backdrop remains somewhat similar to that from Festival da Canção. In the final runthrough of from today’s rehearsals, fog filled the stage to the girls’ ankles to heighten that sense of intimacy. The best way to describe the performance is “inner-world”.
What we thought about MARO’s first rehearsal
Following the release of the snippet, Jazzi gave her initial thoughts and reactions about the first rehearsal of Portugal’s Eurovision representative.
About MARO
MARO initially had plans to become a vet, before finding a love for music. She later went on to study music in Los Angeles. MARO released her first EP back in 2018. Her biggest achievement to date is charting on the official billboard charts with her collaboration with Odezsa. The song is entitled “Better Now”.
Portugal’s Eurovision Journey
Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 52 times – appearing the final 43 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.
Portugal’s most recent participation was with The Black Mamba with the song “Love Is On My Side” – the first song Portugal sent in the English language. The Black Mamba qualified for the Grand Final finishing 12th, after receiving 153 points from the jury and the televote.
