Today the rehearsals for Eurovision 2023 has kicked off in Liverpool. Countries rehearsing on Day 1 include Norway, Malta, Serbia, Latvia, Portugal, Ireland, Croatia, Switzerland, Moldova and Sweden. Next to rehearse today is Portugal’s Mimicat.
Mimicat’ first rehearsal
Another act to take to the Eurovision 2023 stage at Liverpool Arena in Liverpool was Mimicat from Portugal. She will be competing in this year’s competition with her entry “Ai Coração” following her win at the Portuguese selection ‘Festival da Canção 2023’.
Following Mimicat’s first rehearsal, a clip of what went on was posted on the official TikTok account of the Eurovision Song Contest. The clip showed Mimicat before and after they took to the Eurovision stage for the first time, as well as giving us some insight into how well her first rehearsal went.
What did we learn about Mimicat’s staging?

According to the Eurovision 2023 liveblog, Mimicat’s staging has changed quite a bit from the national final. We do not see the return of the sofa. Mimicat is wearing a red cabaret styled dress with lots of lots of feathers. Four dancers join Mimicat on stage, which brings the feeling of the NF performance. The performance ends with a stunning high note.
What we thought of Portugal’s first rehearsal
After Mimicat’s first rehearsal Janek gave his initial thoughts on the snippet that we saw.
Who is Mimicat?
Mimicat, which is the stage name for Marisa Isabel Lopes Mena. She has been singing since the age of nine, but really came about on the music scene in 2014, releasing her debut album “For You” – which recieved a lot of positive reviews in Portugal. Prior to applying for Festival Da Canção, Mimicat made a return to music in 2021 and released two non album singles. Mimicat’s Eurovision 2023 song “Ai Coração” was written by Mimicat herself alongside Luís Pereira.
Portugal’s Eurovision Journey
Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 53 times – appearing the final 44 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.
Portugal’s most recent participation was with MARO with the song “saudade, saudade”. MARO managed to qualify for the Grand Final and once there, she finished 9th, after receiving 207 points from the jury and the televote.
