About Sanremo 2024
Festival di Sanremo is the annual Italian music festival that acts as Italy’s national final, in a sense. The winner of Sanremo has the right to represent Italy at Eurovision but has the right of refusal if they choose not to. However, recently, Sanremo winners tend to go on to represent their countries at the contest. Sanremo has undergone some changes this year but broadly follows the same structure we know and love.
- On the first night, each artist will perform their festival entry. A jury of professional journalists will vote and reveal their top five entries.
- On the second night, half of the entrants will perform again. Then, the public and the radio jury will vote on a 50/50 split, revealing their top five entries.
- On the third night, the other half of the entrants will perform again. Then, the public and the radio jury will vote on a 50/50 split, revealing their top five entries.
- On the fourth night, all artists will perform a cover of a song. The public, journalist jury and radio jury will all vote on a 34/33/33 split respectively. The top five entries are revealed and the entry with the most votes is declared the winner.
- On the fifth and final night, all entries are performed again and are voted on by solely the public. The full rankings for the first to third evenings are revealed, then the televote determines a new ranking of the artists, with the top five being revealed once again. These five artists will perform again and the public, journalist jury and radio jury will vote again in a 34/33/33 percent split and the entry with the most votes is the winner.
Italy’s Eurovision History
Italy has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest since the beginning and has always been considered a powerhouse. Italy have won the contest on three occasions in 1964, 1990 and 2021. The country withdrew after 1997, returning in 2011 with Raphael Gualazzi who sang ‘Madness Of Love’. Raphael placed second in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest after scoring 189 points.
Italy’s most recent entry in 2023 was “Due Vite” by Marco Mengoni. At the close of voting, Italy scored a total of 350 points in the Eurovision 2023 Grand Final, placing 4th. Of these, 176 points came from the juries, whilst the remaining 174 points came from the televote.
