🇷🇴 TVR given extension to pay participation fee to compete in Eurovision 2024

Romania’s TVR has been given an extension to pay the participation fee for Eurovision 2024, meaning that their participation in Malmö is still possible.

Why has Romania been given an extension?

When the EBU revealed the participating countries on Tuesday, there was an asterisk to that list. While Romania did not appear on the confirmed list of countries, their participation is still possible. According to the Romanian news site Paginademedia.ro, the EBU said that they have granted TVR an extension to decide whether they will participate in Malmö after the adoption of the state budget for 2024. As of the time of writing, the EBU has not provided a specific deadline for TVR. However, the last few Romanian state budgets were announced in December of the previous year (i.e. 2023 budget announced in December 2022). So, this could mean that we could see a decision fairly soon.

Romania’s Eurovision History

Romania joined the Eurovision family in the Eastern wave of enlargement, making their debut in 1994. Their entry – Dan Bittman’s “Dincolo de nori” – finished in 21st place with a total of 14 points. At the introduction of the semi-finals, Romania found their stride and was present in every Eurovision final until 2018. Romania’s best result is third place, scored twice in 2005 and 2010 respectively.

In 2023, Romania was represented by Theodor Andrei with his song – “D.G.T. (Off and On)”. Performing at the second semi-final in Liverpool, Romania failed to qualify for the final. At the close of voting in the semi-final, Romania finished joint last, scoring 0 points from the televote.
