As we continue to find out the songs that will be competing in Malmö, the team at That Eurovision Site will be reacting to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2024. The next Eurovision 2024 entry we will be reacting to is Czechia, who will be competing in this year’s competition with “Pedestal” by Aiko.

Our thoughts on “Pedestal”

In this series, we will be providing our opinions in two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst three other members will be giving their written opinion on the entry. This time, Jazzi will be on the main seat and will be giving her video reaction to “Pedestal”

What did the other members of the team think of “Pedestal”?

Tim: This is something that is right up my alley, it gives off that early 00’s pop-rock vibe, kinda like Avril Lavigne. Bearing in mind that this was selected early on, and I have faith that the staging will be transformed just in time for Malmö.

Kittens: In theory this should be right up my street – the lyrics are very me, the hook is catchy and anthemic and the beat is strong enough to dance to. But somehow at the moment I feel it’s somewhat lacking somewhere – it just doesn’t feel like it has quite enough punch. There’s still plenty of time for staging to make a big difference – it’s hard to visualise the ESCZ performance on the Malmö stage, so I hope they have a big plan to make the big impact that this song needs to be memorable.

Angus: This is the kind of moody-yet-fun music that I love, and this is no exception. Musically, the chorus doesn’t quite live up to what the verses seem to promise, but that is a minor nitpick. The lyrics are simple but effective, and while they don’t grab me yet I do think that will change in time. Live-performance and the staging of the track will be key to how this song performs, as many rock tracks lean more on the juries for their result in recent years. So the question is: can this survive the semi?

Czechia’s Eurovision Journey

Czechia made their debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007, with Kabát’s “Malá dama”. However, their debut entry finished last in a 28-song semi-final, scoring only 1 point. Afterwards, this kicked off three consecutive non-qualifications, with their best result coming in 2008, finishing in second-last place. Having withdrawn in 2009 due to poor results, Czechia returned to the Contest in 2015. In 2016, Czechia qualified for the first time with Gabriela Gunciková’s “I Stand”.

In 2023, Vesna represented Czechia with their song “My Sister’s Crown”. Performing in the first semi-final in Liverpool, the band qualified for the final – and finished in 10th place in a field of 26 with 129 points. Of these, 94 points came from the juries and 35 points came from the televote.
