In the past few months, there has been growing speculation about a potential comeback of the Netherlands to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027. This past Wednesday, Jordi Versteegden, media reporter for De Telegraaf, announced on De Oranjezomer that the Netherlands will return to the contest next year. He also asserted that the country’s representative has already been selected.
A potential Eurovision comeback?
The Netherlands, together with Spain, Ireland, Iceland, and Slovenia, decided to withdraw from the 2026 edition of Eurovision due to Israel’s participation. According to Dutch reporter Jordi Versteegden, the country has already decided to return to Eurovision 2027:
We’re just going, because I hear through the grapevine that AVROTROS is going to announce in two weeks that we’re going again. We’re going, and I wish that for everyone who loves the Song Contest.
Although AVROTROS stated that it would make an announcement regarding its 2027 participation in Eurovision in mid-August, the official confirmation has not come yet. According to Versteegden, it has also been decided that 30-year-old Dutch singer Davina Michelle will represent the Netherlands at next year’s Eurovision. Davina, who was an interval act in Semi-Final 1 in 2021, had previously been rumoured to represent her country in 2022.
This news comes after Dutch broadcaster Omroep Max, which had previously expressed interest in taking over the country’s participation in the contest and criticized AVROTROS’ decision to withdraw, announced earlier this month that it was no longer interested. This means that the Netherlands’ participation in Eurovision 2027 could be organized by AVROTROS, which had made Israel’s withdrawal a condition for the country’s comeback to the contest, or by other Dutch broadcasters like RTL Nederland.
Netherland’s Eurovision journey
The Netherlands are one of the founding countries of Eurovision, having performed the very first song ever on the Contest stage back in 1956. While the result of “De Vogels van Holland” is unknown, the Netherlands have garnered 5 wins. Their most recent win came in 2019, seeing them host the 2021 contest after the 2020 edition was cancelled due to Covid. However, the Netherlands are also known to have had the longest ever non qualification streak in the semi-final era. The country missed out on the Grand Final 8 times between 2005 and 2012.
Claude represented the Netherlands in 2025 with the song “C’est La Vie”. Competing in the first semi-final, he eventually qualified for the final in Basel. In the final, the Netherlands would eventually finish in 12th place with 175 points. 133 of these points came from the juries, while the remaining 42 came from the televote. The nation withdrew from the 2026 Contest due to Israel’s participation.
