Theodor Andrei performing 'D.G.T. (Off and On)' for Romania at the Eurovision Second Semi-Final at Liverpool Arena

After receiving an extension following the initial announcement of participating countries, TVR has confirmed that Romania will not participate in Eurovision 2024.

Non-Participation Announcement

On the list of participating countries released in December, there was an asterisk. Romania had been given an extension to decide whether it would participate in the contest this year. However, after today’s Board of Directors meeting, TVR decided that they would not participate this year. Instead, they plan to prioritise other major events such as the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. There were five votes in favour, four votes against and four abstentions. However, it seems that they will not be gone for long, as their statement refers to the idea of “postponing participation for a future edition.”

Romania’s Eurovision History

Romania joined the Eurovision family in the Eastern wave of enlargement, making their debut in 1994. Their entry – Dan Bittman’s “Dincolo de nori” – finished in 21st place with a total of 14 points. At the introduction of the semi-finals, Romania found their stride and was present in every Eurovision final until 2018. Romania’s best result is third place, scored twice in 2005 and 2010 respectively.

In 2023, Romania was represented by Theodor Andrei with his song – “D.G.T. (Off and On)”. Performing at the second semi-final in Liverpool, Romania failed to qualify for the final. At the close of voting in the semi-final, Romania finished joint last, scoring 0 points from the televote.
