What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from UMK 2024?
Daniel (“Paskana”): Alert the press, I’ve gone for a sad girl for Eurovision. Paskana is dark, strong, powerful and soulful song with incredibly meaningful and deep lyrics that are very pervasive throughout the song, which is a testament to Sara’s strength as an artist to so clearly get the mood of the song across. Finland have knocked it out of the park yet again with the UMK selection, but it has to be Sara Siipola for me.
Kittens (“Kuori mua”): From the minute the beat kicked in I knew this was going to be for me. That club beat with that fast delivery, that fierce style? This certainly grabbed my attention. I can’t wait to see this on the stage, and if it’s half as good as the music video then I will not be able to keep my eyes off her! Looking forward to it!
Rory (“Glow”): Any song following in the wake of Cha Cha Cha will always be compared to Käärijä, but Jesse offers something fresh and original, in a way that the other artists don’t. Glow is a track that perfectly blends Jesse’s African roots with a cool Western style, and with an overly positive message, I think it can connect to a wider audience. Time will tell, but I’m cautiously optimistic
Finland’s Eurovision Journey
Finland debuted in the 1961 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 10th with Laila Kunnunen’s “Valoa ikkunassa.” Since then they have competed 56 times, and appeared in the final 48 times. Finland has finished in the top 10 an impressive 14 times. They have won the contest once in 2006, with Lordi’s performance of “Hard Rock Hallelujah” getting 292 points.
Finland’s most recent entry was “Cha Cha Cha” by Käärijä. He won the first semi-final in Liverpool, thus qualifying for the final. At the close of voting, he gained a total of 526 points, earning them 2nd place – Finland’s second best result of all time. Käärijä received 376 points from the televote, and an extra 150 points from the juries.
