Ahead of him performing at the London Eurovision Party, Tim spoke to Michael Rice about his participation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. He represented the UK with his song “Bigger Than Us”.

During the interview, Tim and Michael spoke about how he needed the time to write his own music, as well as get his image right since the Contest in 2019. They also spoke about his time on American Idol, as well as what has changed for him as an artist since he competed in the contest five years ago.

Who is Michael Rice?

Michael Rice first started his singing career in 2014, when he auditioned for the U.K. version of The X Factor. Sadly for Michael, it wasn’t to be then and he was eliminated at the bootcamp stage of the competition. Later in 2018, Michael took part in new reality TV show “All Tigether Now”, which he won with a rendition of “Hallelujah”.

In 2019, Michael later took part in the UK’s national selection for Eurovision “You Decide”, which he ended up winning with the song “Bigger Than Us”. Michael Rice went on to represent the U.K. at Eurovision in 2019, where he scored 11 points, and ultimately finished last in the competition. It was in 2024, when Michael Rice relaunched himself to the world, by auditioning for American Idol, so far he has advanced to “Hollywood Week”.

United Kingdom’s Eurovision journey

The UK is one of the most successful countries at the Eurovision Song Contest. Debuting at the second edition ever of the Contest in 1957, the United Kingdom won the competition on five separate occasions. The most recent win for the UK was in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves, singing “Love Shine A Light”. The UK also holds the record for the number of second place finishes – currently at 16.

In 2023, Mae Muller represented the UK on home soil in Liverpool with her song “I Wrote A Song”. At the close of voting, the UK finished 25th in a field of 26, earning a total of 24 points. Of these, 15 points came from the jury, whilst the remaining 9 came from the televote.
