Ahead of her hosting gig at the London Eurovision Party, Tim spoke to Lucie Jones about her participation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. She represented the UK in Kyiv with her song “Never Give Up on You”.

Together, Tim and Lucie reflect on her Eurovision experience in Ukraine and why she wanted to host the London Eurovision Party. They also chat about her career in radio and theatre following Eurovision. She also gives us an exclusive on whether she would return to Eurovision in the future, as well as having a chat with this year’s UK entrant Olly Alexander.

Who is Lucie Jones?

Lucie Jones is a 33-year-old singer from Cardiff in Wales. Jones first shot to fame appearing on the 2009 edition of The X Factor in the UK, but was eliminated after losing the public vote to Jedward. After her time on the show, Lucie went into theatre and West End productions, starring in the likes of Wicked, Waitress and Les Misรฉrables. Jones represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Singing “Never Give Up On You”, she finished in 15th place with 111 points.

United Kingdom’s Eurovision journey

The UK is one of the most successful countries at the Eurovision Song Contest. Debuting at the second edition ever of the Contest in 1957, the United Kingdom won the competition on five separate occasions. The most recent win for the UK was in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves, singing โ€œLove Shine A Lightโ€. The UK also holds the record for the number of second place finishes โ€“ currently at 16.

In 2023, Mae Muller represented the UK on home soil in Liverpool with her song โ€œI Wrote A Songโ€. At the close of voting, the UK finished 25th in a field of 26, earning a total of 24 points. Of these, 15 points came from the jury, whilst the remaining 9 came from the televote.
