It has been revealed by Liechtensteiner news outlet Liechtensteiner Vaterland that the national radio broadcaster Radio Liechtenstein is set to apply for membership to the European Broadcasting Union.

It was stated that Radio Liechtenstein’s aspirations for European Broadcasting Union membership comes from renewed interest in the country finally making its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest. Membership of the EBU is the most important step a country must take in order to participate in the contest. The interest from Radio Liechtenstein raises hopes that the country will be able to compete, following the announcement in 2022 that 1FLTV had given up on its aspirations of EBU membership. 1FLTV, the country’s only native television station, had previously embarked on over a decade’s long saga to become a member and ultimately compete in Eurovision, before scrapping future attempts.

While radio stations are active members of the European Broadcasting Union, and form part of the broadcast of the contest, no purely radio station currently acts as any countries broadcasters at Eurovision. As Radio Liechtenstein does not broadcast any television services, it is unknown how their participation would taken. At time of writing no recognition or comment of Radio Liechtenstein’s EBU aspirations had been made by the union.

Liechtenstein’s (attempted) Eurovision Journey

Despite not having a broadcaster at the time Liechtenstein has attempted to participate in Eurovision once before. In 1976 they attempted to take part in the contest with the song “Little Cowboy” sung by Biggi Bachman, however, they were not allowed to take part due to not having a broadcaster to participate under.

Liechtenstein is the only European country as well as Kosovo and the Vatican City to have never participated in the Eurovision Song Contest.
