Watch our interview with Bel Tempo here!

During their conversation, Shiloh asked Bel Tempo about their history of collaboration with LEGZDINA, what they hope to achieve from Supernova, and more!

About Bel Tempo and LEGZDINA

The duo Bel Tempo released their first single “Think Too Much” in 2018, following producer Andis Ansons and singer-composer Julijs Raimonds Melngailis’ meeting at a songwriting camp in Riga. In the six years since their debut track, they have released music across a variety of genres, at times working remotely, as Ansons was based in Latvia and Melngailis in England. Their first EP, Pessimismus, was nominated for Best Debut and Best Electronic at the 2022 Latvian Music Awards (Zelta Mikrofons). They take musical inspiration from artists such as Jungle, Caribou, Sampha, and Toro y Moi.

Elīza Legzdiņa, born in Ogre, Latvia and educated at The University of East Anglia, first appeared on the performing arts scene through poetry readings. Her journey in recorded music began in 2019, when she co-founded the poetry night Say It Back in January and released her first music in May. She wrote her undergraduate dissertation on hip-hop, and also studied opera; while studying for a masters’ degree at Goldsmiths, University Of London, she first began writing poetry and later recording her own music. She releases primarily sex-positive music and is a member of the women-led collective Loud LDN. She appeared at Supernova 2023 as a guest artist.

“The Water” isn’t the first collaboration between these two artists–LEGZDINA featured on “DeepBluSea”, a track on Bel Tempo’s 2022 Pessimismus EP, and they have also been friends for several years.

Latvia’s Eurovision journey

Latvia made their Eurovision debut in 2000, finishing 3rd with “My Star” by Brainstorm. They have performed at every contest since and quickly won in 2002. Marie N sang “I Wanna,” scoring 176 points and bringing Eurovision to Riga. Since then, Latvia has finished in the top 10 two more times, in 2005 and 2015.

Latvia’s most recent entry on the Eurovision stage was Dons, who performed “Hollow”. The song qualified from the semi-final, bringing Latvia to the grand final for the first time since 2016. In the Grand Final Dons finished in 16th with 64 points, 26 from the public vote and 38 from the national juries.

Supernova‘s tenth edition will start with a semifinal on 1 February and conclude on 8 February; 20 songs will fight for the opportunity to represent Latvia at Eurovision 2025 in Basel, Switzerland.
