What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from Eurosong 2025?
Kittens (Bobbi): I was expecting some things to have punch in Ireland after Bambie Thug, and this definitely does that. A grimy industrial beat reminiscent of Hatari, with fierce lyrics and an artist who is bound to ladle on the attitude on stage. I feel like this is edgy enough to give that impact on stage, but not so much it might alienate people – a nice balance between two worlds.
Angus (Adgy): This song ticks a lot of boxes. Between Adgy’s vocals and the general songwriting, this is a highly accessible piece of pop, but there are enough flourishes in here to also make the track recognizably and identifiably Irish without feeling cliché. There also is something about this song that just really transports me away, with the chorus making me feel as if I am running through an Irish city or the countryside. Absolutely something very modern Eurovision about this, without feeling like it is chasing trends too much.
Rory (Reylta): Reylta’s offering really adds a touch of Celtic mysticism to Eurosong this year. I really can feel the mythology of the music and the lyrics as Reylta really just explodes with her vocal chants, that really put on a full show for listeners. Ireland has been crying out for a good Celtic-style song since The Voice, and I really do think this will help to bring fans what they want – at least in terms of the song. Staging makes me nervous, but a reliance on tradition and warm colours will really make this stand out.
What is Eurosong?
Eurosong is the Irish national selection for Eurovision. The selection show often takes place on Ireland’s Friday night chat show “The Late Late Show”. It first started selecting Ireland’s Eurovision representative in 2006. In 2016 Ireland went internal with their Eurovision selection. In 2022 Eurosong returned as the selection method for Eurovision in Ireland.
Ireland’s Eurovision Journey
In 1965, Ireland made their debut in the Eurovision Song Contest with Butch Moore and the song “Walking the Streets in the Rain”, which managed to place 6th. Since their debut, Ireland has participated 57 times (making the Grand Final 46 times), and has won the competition seven times, which is currently tied for the record of most wins.
Ireland’s latest Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Bambie Thug, with their song “Doomsday Blue”. They placed 6th in the Grand Final, receiving 278 points in total, 138 of which were from televoters and 142 were from the national juries. This is Ireland’s best result in the 21st century.
