As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Ukraine, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “Bird of Pray” by Ziferblat.
Our thoughts on “Bird of Pray”
In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Shiloh will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “Bird of Pray”
What did the other team members think of “Bird of Pray”?
Kittens: I’m a bit conflicted on this one but only because I absolutely did not get it at Vidbir, but it has really begun to grow on me! I do think that’s a potential problem for Ukraine at Eurovision because you do only have that three minutes to make that first impression, although full disclosure, this is not my usual fare musically. I think they will need to work hard on staging and promotion to give it that little extra lift for attention – but I also think that what they’re offering is quite unique in this year, so it will pull in an audience that might not have much challenge for their vote.
Tim: Ukraine always brings something different, and I really admire that whether or not would have this to their taste, they really make the effort to bring the best out of the song in terms of staging. Personally, it isn’t something I would seek, but when it comes up, I wouldn’t skip it, I appreciate the instrumentation, it’s timeless.
Molly: I love the staging, which represents the more calming sides of the song. The vocals are a standout to me, with a unique style that pulls me in. This song is unique in a way that would either have people love it or dislike it, which may work either way when it comes to the final. The song is artistic in that it brings everything together in one beautiful package; however, it may falter in the sense of not having that wider appeal.

Ukraine is one of the most successful countries to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. The country has scored nine top-five placements, with an extra four top-ten finishes. Ukraine won the Contest three times – in 2004, 2016 and 2022 respectively. Ukraine made history for being the first ex-Soviet country to win the Contest more than once.
In 2024 alyona alyona and Jerry Heil represented Ukraine in Malmö with their song “Teresa and Maria”. The duo finished in 3rd place, scoring 453 points – of which 146 points came from the jury, whilst the remaining 307 points came from the televote.
