As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Portugal, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “Deslocado” by NAPA.
Our thoughts on “Deslocado”
In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “Deslocado”
What did the other team members think of “Deslocado”?
Daniel: Sorry if I’ve already annoyed you enough by talking about this song, but it’s with good reason. This is absolutely everything I love about Portuguese music and about Portugal in Eurovision condensed into a beautiful three minute package. The lyrics are by my money the best the contest has to offer this year, made so much better by just how true they ring to the band and everyone their compatriots in Madeira. The melody meanwhile is as sweet as honey, and I just adore how all of the elements join together. I’m a big fan of saudade in music, and this is one of the best examples we’ve ever seen. This song and videos set to hit have taken my TikTok feed by storm in recent weeks and I’m loving every second.
Jonathan: Daniel is obviously correct, this song is beautifully written and in its lyrical and musical subtlety reflects everything that’s great about Portugal at Eurovision. It’s just so good for the contest that RTP (and the Portuguese public) recognise that having a national sound, or at least a consistent desire to prioritise old-school artistry over headlines is in itself a 5-year plan. The problem with that however is the tendency for that subtlety to go over people’s heads and if it doesn’t catch people’s attention to get forgotten. However, in a year with a lack of guitar-driven music, might this stand out more? I hope so!
Euan: Finally Portugal having some sense and sending something majestic. In a year that’s very loud, and fully in your face, NAPA feels incredibly refreshing. This isn’t a song that insists in its presence, it just slowly lets the the calming beautiful vibes of it to wash over you and creates this intoxicating and aggressively Portuguese feeling that resonates with you long after listening; and is quite the feet for such a low-key song.
