Before she participates in the songs section of Sámi Grand Prix on Saturday, Daniel spoke with Hildá Länsman, who is hoping for her second win with her song “Duodjemagiija“.

Daniel spoke with Hildá about her path to making Sámi music through her mother, her various musical projects which include a UMK participation, as well as her song which focusses on traditional Sámi handicrafts.
Who is Hildá Länsman?
Sámi singer and joiker Hildá Länsman has been creating music since childhood thanks in large part to her mother, Ulla Pirttijärvi, with whom she participated in UMK2015 as part of the group Solju. Länsman is also a member of the groups Vildá and Gájanas, and won the songs section of Sámi Grand Prix alongside Lávre in 2021 with the song “Jođi”.
in January she, alongside producer Tuomas Norvio released the album “Dajan”, and last month was featured on the album “ORIGO” by Finnish artist Jenni Vartiainen.
What is Sámi Grand Prix?
Created in 1990 as part of the Sámi Easter Festival, Sámi Grand Prix is a music competition consisting of two parts, a modern song competition, comparable to Eurovision and its companion national selection shows, as well a joik competition, each with six competitors. That means we’ll have two winners, a winning song and a winning joik.
Both sections are decided on by a mix of an expert jury and a televote in a 50/50 split. All of the songs must be performed at least partially in one of the Sámi languages we went through earlier, and the usual rules you know and love of not releasing your song before the official release apply here too.
