Who is our winner from Supernova?

We ranked the songs taking part in the final, using a 1-12 ranking. 1 being our favourite, 12 being our least favourite song. We then calculated the average of all our rankings.

3rd. LEGZDINA – “Ribbon” (4.60):

2nd. Vēstinieks – “Vai tas ir kāds brīnums?” (4.00):

1st. Robert Ox – “Ravin’ at the Taj Mahal” (3.40):

What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from Supernova?

George (Ravin’ at the Taj Mahal): I really like this one, it’s one of the rare occasions we get proper rave influences in Eurovision. It also reminds me of a 2016 song, which fits perfectly with the current wave of nostalgia, the viral known trend. Overall, it’s a fun entry and could serve as a decent successor to Tautumeitas.

Samantha (Vai Tas Ir Kāds brinums): This song has been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it. It has a retro vibe whilst also being super fresh. It reminds me of summer evenings on holiday and just vibing. It’s not your typical Eurovision song and I don’t think it would really find its place in the ESC sphere but on a personal listening level I’m obsessed.

Rory (Ribbon): This song is quite possibly one of the most fresh we have in the entire national selection season this year. I was really into The Water last year with the chill vibes that Legzdina brought to the table with Bel Tempo so I was thrilled that she was able to come back with something that is a bit gritty but still radio-friendly. I am consistently streaming this and I cannot wait to see what we have in the live show!

And what were the teams thoughts on the national final as a whole?

Kittens: Oh supernova, you have nothing much for me here, and that’s okay, not everything needs to be for me. I know that Supernova has it’s own sound, and that’s lovely, but for me there’s so little here that has much hope in a modern Eurovision. Maybe everything will change on stage, but going from last year where there were so many songs that were instantly competitive, to this year, feels like a big downgrade. I really hope there’s something big here hiding, but for me it’s a bit of a disappointment.

What is Supernova?

With the exception of 2021, where Samanta Tina was internally reselected following the cancellation of the 2020 contest, Latvia has always used a national final to select its Eurovision representative. Since 2015, this has been “Supernova”. In recent years, Supernova has usually been made up of two shows, a semi-final and a final. In recent years, around 15 artists have taken part in the semi-final with around 10 artists advancing to the final. The final results of Supernova consist of a combination of a jury vote and the televote, at a 50-50% split.

Latvia’s Eurovision Journey

Latvia made their Eurovision debut in 2000, finishing 3rd with “My Star” by Brainstorm. They have performed at every contest since and managed to win in 2002. Marie N sang “I Wanna,” scoring 176 points and bringing Eurovision to Riga in the process. Latvia also managed to finish in the top 10 two more times, in 2005 and 2015.

Latvia’s most recent entry on the Eurovision stage was Tautumeitas, who performed “Bur man laimi”. Latvia successfully qualified from the second semi-final for the second year in a row. In the Grand Final, Tautumeitas finished in 13th place with 158 points. Of these points, 42 were from the public vote, and 116 were from the national juries.
