Malta has confirmed their intention to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, due to be held in Burgas. Maltese broadcaster PBS announced they will attend the contest in May.
PBS confirms participation ahead of MESC
PBS confirmed it would be taking part in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest on Friday (August 14th). Shortly after the announcement that Burgas will host Eurovision, broadcaster PBS shared a post to its Eurovision-specific channels.
In the post, PBS confirmed that the Malta Eurovision Song Contest will be used to select its entry for next year’s Contest. Further information on when the application window will be opened will be announced in due course.
Malta’s Eurovision journey
Malta made its Eurovision debut in 1971, with Joe Grech performing “Marija I-Maltija” (Maria the Maltese Lass), finishing 18th with 52 points. Malta did not participate in Eurovision from 1975 until 1991, when they returned with the song “Could It Be” by Paul Giordimaina and Georgina, finishing 12th with 32 points. Since then, Malta has been at every Eurovision and finished in the top 10 an impressive 12 times. Their best result is second place, which they’ve achieved twice. The first time was in 2002, when Ira Losco sang “7th Wonder,” and the second time in 2005 with Chiara’s “Angel.”
Whilst they have used selection competitions before, such as Mużika Malta and X Factor Malta, Malta Eurovision Song Contest has been the method to pick Malta’s entry for the contest since 2022, but has consistently made changes to the format in each of the years it has been held. The 2024 format consisted of four semi-final shows, branded as “XOW” which took place in October and November 2023, months before the Final in February. Since then, semi-finals have been changed and the final is usually decided by a combination of Jury and Televote scores. Miriana Conte was the first artist who came from MESC to qualify for the Grand Final of Eurovision with her song “Serving”, in 2025.
AIDAN competed in MESC 2026 with a song written in part by 2024 participant Sarah Bonnici. AIDAN represented Malta at the contest with his song “Bella”, the first Eurovision song for Malta to feature the Maltese language in 54 years. Competing in the second semi-final, Malta qualified, with AIDAN eventually finishing in 18th place, earning a total of 89 points. Of these, 81 came from the juries, while just 8 came from televoters.
