Germany’s selection process for Eurovision 2023 is hotting up. Public broadcaster ARD/NDR has confirmed that the selection show – Under Lied für Liverpool – will take place on March 3rd, 2023.
What to expect on March 3rd for Unser Lied für Liverpool
Earlier, it had been announced that Germany’s selection process was already in motion. The path to Unser Lied für Liverpool came in three stages; an internal listening of over 600 songs, with the best facing a panel across demographics. Of these, at least seven acts will make it to the live show – in addition to the Tiktok winner, which will bump the number up to a minimum of eight. This show is now confirmed to take place on March 3rd.
Regarding the Tiktok winner, voting will take place between January 27th and February 3rd. After the closure of the voting window, the winner will be announced on February 4th. This announcement will be made during the newest edition of the “Alles Eurovision” webshow, broadcast at 6:00pm CET.
Comedian and presenter Barbara Schöneberger will return to host the national selection. This is the seventh German national selection Barbara has hosted. The selection will take place at 10:20pm CET on March 3rd. The show will also be held at MMC Studios in Köln.
Germany’s Eurovision journey
Germany has been part of Eurovision since the beginning, debuting in 1956. Their debut entries were Walter Andreas Schwarz’s “Im Wartesaal zum großen Glück” and Freddy Quinn’s “So geht das jede Nacht”. Germany has appeared at every Eurovision since except for 1996, which means they have been at more contests than any other country. They have a long history of success in Eurovision, finishing in the top 3 an impressive 13 times. Germany has won the contest twice. Nicole won in 1982 with her song “Ein bißchen Frieden”, taking home 161 points in the process. Their second win came in 2010, when Lena scored 246 points with her song “Satellite”.
Germany’s most recent Eurovision entry was Malik Harris’ “Rockstars”. As Germany is part of the Big 5, they automatically qualified for the Grand Final. In the Final, the song received 6 points and finished 25th in the Final.
