🇸🇪 The cities bidding to host Eurovision 2024

Over a month ago, Sweden won Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. Fastforward on to June, SVT is now working hard to find the host city for Eurovision 2024. In this article, we look at the cities that are in the running to host next year’s contest in Sweden.

Stockholm

First up in the list is Stockholm, which has hosted the contest in 1975, 2000 and 2016. Stockholm has officially expressed its interest. Previous reports have mentioned that it aims to bring the contest to Friends Arena, where Melodifestivalen Final is usually held. Unfortunately, the plans for this have been cut short as international pop star Taylor Swift added a date for May 17 on the European Leg of her “Eras Tour”. Now, the local media are reporting that the city would like to build a temporary arena to host the contest, with the plans facing some opposition.

Malmö

Another city that has entered the race is Malmö, which hosted the competition in 1992 and 2013. The city was unable to place a bid for Eurovision 2016, due to the availability of Malmö Arena. Upon checking the availability of Malmö Arena, the only event standing in the way is an ‘The Show – A Tribute to ABBA’ show taking place on the 19th of April.

Örnsköldsvik

This time we move over to the north of the country, Örnsköldsvik, which has the Hägglunds Arena as the venue for next year’s contest. The city has already hosted Melodifestivalen, with the recent being the Semi-Final of Melodifestivalen 2023. The cityhas also made a bid to host Eurovision 2016. However, it was unsuccessful in gaining the right to host the contest. The city has even and gone ahead and released a promotional video, detailing how the city would look like if the city is successful in its bid.

Gothenburg

Finally, we also have Gothenburg (Göteborg), the city is mostly known for hosting the 1985 contest, is also a regulat stop on the Melodifestivalen tour. The city does have an arena, which does meet the size requirements. However, Scandanvium might not be able to host Eurovision due to the arena might not being able to meet the requirements.
