National final season is officially kicking off in Ukraine, as the shortlisted acts for its national selection – Vidbir 2024 – have been revealed. The show is set to take place in February.
Ten finalists through – one to find
Earlier this month, public broadcaster Suspilne announced the longlist of artists competing in the selection. Following this release, organisers have whittled down the competing artists to just ten. These ten will be performing in Vidbir 2024, hoping to represent Ukraine in Malmö.
The ten acts already through to the selection are:
Artist(s) | Song Title |
alyona alyona & Jerry Heil | “Teresa & Maria” |
Drevo | “Endless Chain” |
INGRET | “Keeper” |
MÉLOVIN | “DREAMER” |
NAHABA | “GLASSS” |
NAZVA | “Slavic English” |
SKYLERR | “Time Is Running Out” |
YAGODY | “Tsunamia” |
YAKTAK | “Lalala” |
Ziferblat | “Place I Call Home” |
Amongst the selected acts are two well-known Eurovision favourites. MÉLOVIN previously represented Ukraine in 2018 with his song “Under the Ladder”, finishing in 17th place. Jerry Heil has tried to represent Ukraine on two separate occasions – in 2020 and 2023 respectively. At the close of voting, she finished in 6th and 3rd places each time.
As well as this, an eleventh act will be chosen from the longlist to join the ten already selected. All ten remaining acts will have their songs released, with viewers being able to choose who will advance. The public will have the chance to have their say on the Ukrainian government app Diyi, and the lucky act will make the final addition to the line-up. The remaining songs will then be released in January, ahead of the national final in February.
Ukraine’s Eurovision journey
Ukraine is one of the most successful countries to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. The country has scored eight top-five placements, with an extra four top-ten finishes. Ukraine won the Contest three times – in 2004, 2016 and 2022 respectively. Ukraine made history for being the first ex-Soviet country to win the Contest more than once.
In 2023, TVORCHI represented Ukraine as co-host entry in Liverpool with their song “Heart of Steel”. The duo finished in 6th place, scoring 243 points – of which 54 points came from the jury, whilst the remaining 189 points came from the televote.
