San Marinese national broadcaster San Marino RTV has partnered with London-based AI startup Casperski. They will collaborate with producers and singers to create one song for its Eurovision selection. San Marino confirmed their participation in August of 2023, with the national selection competition taking place in February.
A Eurovision AI first
San Marino RTV’s decision to collaborate with Casperski will mark the first appearance of an AI-generated song in a Eurovision national selection. The competition currently has no rules governing the eligibility of AI produced songs, despite discussions having taken place in the EBU over their legitimacy. Nevertheless, the Eurovision Song Contest has already inspired the creation of an AI song contest that takes place every year.
How will the collaboration work?
Casperski allows potential producers and composers to use their in-house AI producers Casperaki, Sugar Tunez, Flowmaster, and Albert Einstein to create arrangements, build out instrumentation, write lyrics, and create songs based on prompts entered by the user. The company will also pair singers with the produced songs. This will culminate with a songwriting camp in London during January 2024, after which ten songs will be selected. From this, one song will be selected to take part in Una Voce Per San Marino in Febuary.
San Marino’s Eurovision Journey
As one of the smallest countries in Europe, San Marino made its debut in the competition in 2008 with Miodio and the song “Complice”. Since then they have participated in the competition 13 times (3 of which where they qualified for the Grand Final), and their best result was in 2019, with Serhat and “Say Na Na Na”. Italian band Piqued Jacks represented San Marino in 2023 in Liverpool with the song “Like An Animal”. The band performed in the second semi-final, but unfortunately didn’t qualify for the Grand Final. Overall, San Marino placed joint-last, receiving 0 points from the televote.
