While there has not been an official announcement, the Eurovision website’s Frequently Asked Questions section has revealed that the semi-final allocation draw will take place on Tuesday the 30th of January, 2024.
What is the allocation draw?
The allocation draw takes place every year to determine two key things:
- Which countries compete in which semi-final, and which half they will compete in
- Which semi-final the ‘Big 5’ (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom) and host country (Sweden) will vote in and have their performances broadcast
This year, there will either be 31 or 32 countries participating in the semi-finals, depending on whether Romania can pay the participation fee in time. That means that there will either be 16 countries per semi or one with 15 and one with 16, like last year.
The Journey to Eurovision 2024
The Nordic country will be hosting the 68th edition of the competition following Loreen’s historic win at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. One month after the 2023 contest taking place SVT revealed the Core Team that will be working on the competition.
Four cities were in the running to host the 68th edition of the competition, and they were:
- Gothenburg
- Malmö
- Örnsköldsvik
- Stockholm
