What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from the Semi-Final of Eesti Laul 2024?

Euan (Oblivion): “With a solid hook from the opening seconds ‘Oblivion’ managed to catch my attention and stay with me the most of any songs. I feel many songs of this style in Eurovision selections tend to overstretch and over-emphasise the vocals to have more of an impact, but ‘Oblivion’ does falter here. There’s a perfect blend of the dark and atmospheric backing track with Ewert’s light mellifluous vocals that works extremely well, and for me stands out more so in what I’d consider quite a stacked Eesti Laul. This is exactly the quality and sound I’ve come to expect from Estonia”

Kittens (FOMO): I was hoping for something like this this year, but was surprised to find it in Estonia. Admittedly I do normally struggle with Eesti Laul as the songs are rarely to my taste, but this song stands out a mile from the others – the sound is definitely distinctive in this selection.  A dark dance pop banger that I can’t wait to hear in a club – hoping that the staging reflects that clubbing vibe!

Daniel ((nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi): This is the type of song that makes me love Eurovision. It’s a brilliant energetic banger with a really fun usage of a folk element with the talharpa,it’s been on repeat both in the playlists and in my head since release, I think it can stand out both in Eesti Laul, and should it get there Eurovision, and I would love to see 5Miinust and Puuluup in Malmö.

Estonia’s Eurovision Journey

Estonia has appeared at almost every Eurovision since their debut in 1994. They have won the contest once with Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL in 2001, singing Everybody. Other notable Estonian entrants include 3rd placer Sahlene with Runaway in 2002 and Ines with Once In A Lifetime in 2000, who placed 4th. More recently, their highest-placing entries have been Urban Symphony with Rändajad in 2009 and Ott Lepland with Kuula in 2012, both of which finished in 6th place.

In 2023, Estonia elected to send Alika through Eesti Laul to the Contest with “Bridges”. She successfully qualified for the final and finshed in 8th place with 168 points. Alika finished with 146 points from the juries, and an additional 22 points from the televote.
