Estonia is continuing its preparations for Eesti Laul 2024. As the artists gear up for the semi-finals in January, Jonathan speaks to Eesti Laul returnee Sofia Rubina. She is vying to represent Estonia in Malmรถ with her entry “Be Good”.

Together, Jonathan and Sofia talk about what keeps Sofia returning to Eesti Laul and her approach to music making and performance. She also tells us about her song’s meaning, and how she plans on staging it at Eesti Laul 2024. She also gives recommendations for her other music, if you enjoy “Be Good”.
About Sofia Rubina
Sofia is one of Estonia’s most well-established jazz and soul singers. This is her sixth time entering Estonia’s national selection, having previously competed in 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2019. She has just released her sixth studio album, “I Am Soul”. Beyond Estonia, her music has taken her all over the world to perform in festivals as far as Asia, engaging her audiences with her mix of soul, jazz, house, and pop. She will be performing in the semi-final of Eesti Laul on the 20th January.
Estonia’s Eurovision journey
Estonia has appeared at almost every Eurovision since their debut in 1994. They have won the contest once with Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL in 2001, singing Everybody. Other notable Estonian entrants include 3rd placer Sahlene with Runaway in 2002 and Ines with Once In A Lifetime in 2000, who placed 4th. More recently, their highest-placing entries have been Urban Symphony with Rรคndajad in 2009 and Ott Lepland with Kuula in 2012, both of which finished in 6th place.
In 2023, Estonia elected to send Alika through Eesti Laul to the Contest with “Bridges”. She successfully qualified for the final and finshed in 8th place with 168 points. Alika finished with 146 points from the juries, and an additional 22 points from the televote.
