What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from the Semi-Final of Söngvakeppnin 2024?

Kittens (“Ró”): While a bit more chill than the rest of the selection, RÓ caught my attention because of that kicking D&B beat that kicks in during the chorus and carries it into cute lil bop. Maybe unassuming at the start, it definitely brings the drama with those choral elements, while it slowly worms its way into your brain over time. With all of these elements combined in an infectious manner, it’s no wonder RÓ is one of my faves this season.

Jazzi (“Bíómynd”): Honestly I adore this, I definitely prefer the Icelandic version of this song to the English. I think the vibe of the song just works better in Icelandic. This feels extremely modern, and it definitely feels like something that would grab viewers’ attention. I feel this would definitely get Iceland back in the Eurovision final if they were to pick it.

Iceland’s Eurovision Journey

Iceland made its debut on the Eurovision stage in 1986, finishing 16th with the song “Gleðibankinn” (Bank of Fun) by ICY. In their 35 appearances, Iceland has finished in top 10 an impressive 7 times. Their best result to date is second place, which they have achieved twice. The first time was in 1999, where Selma Björnsdóttir received 146 points for her performance of “All Out of Luck”. The second time was in 2009, with Yohanna singing “Is It True” and receiving 218 points.

Iceland’s most recent representative on the Eurovision stage was Diljá, singing “Power” in Liverpool. At the close of the voting, Diljá finished 11th in the semi-final with 44 points from the televote. This meant that Iceland missed out on qualifying for the final.
