What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from the Final of Söngvakeppnin 2024?
Kittens (“Wild West”): Wild west might seem quieter than the rest of the selection but it has such a catchy lil mmmmhhh hook to it that’s really memorable. There’s obviously the story behind the song and the staging to think about but even without that the song stands on its own as a little earworm of a track that I think will stand out well in the contest.
Jazzi (“Bíómynd”): I have already mentioned I absolutely adore this as a track, I will admit I prefer the Icelandic version as a song compared to the bilingual version, so I am very happy they opted to kept this in Icelandic.
Daniel ( “Into the Atmosphere ): Whilst I would’ve preferred if Sigga chose to keep the Icelandic version, Into The Atmosphere is a really fun and uplifting song, and she showed in the semi final she’s capable of a really good stage presence that will be great fun on the night
Iceland’s Eurovision Journey
Iceland made its debut on the Eurovision stage in 1986, finishing 16th with the song “Gleðibankinn” (Bank of Fun) by ICY. In their 35 appearances, Iceland has finished in top 10 an impressive 7 times. Their best result to date is second place, which they have achieved twice. The first time was in 1999, where Selma Björnsdóttir received 146 points for her performance of “All Out of Luck”. The second time was in 2009, with Yohanna singing “Is It True” and receiving 218 points.
Iceland’s most recent representative on the Eurovision stage was Diljá, singing “Power” in Liverpool. At the close of the voting, Diljá finished 11th in the semi-final with 44 points from the televote. This meant that Iceland missed out on qualifying for the final.
