As we now have the songs competing for this year’s competition in Malmö, the team at That Eurovision Site will be reacting to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2024. The next Eurovision 2024 entry we will be reacting to is Moldova, who will be competing in this year’s competition with “In The Middle” by Natalia Barbu.
Our thoughts on “In The Middle”
In this series, we will be providing our opinions in two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members of the team will be giving their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be giving his reaction to “In The Middle”
What did the other members of the team think of “In The Middle”?
Jazzi: There are elements of this that I am enjoying more as the season goes on, the song still hasn’t fully clicked with me and I am not sure if it ever will. The almost operatic elements in the vocals I do really like, it really showcases Natalia’s voice. I did prefer her 2007 entry to this. But this shows two sides to Natalia as an artist I guess and shows how versatile her voice is. I do worry about its chances come May. But Moldova does have a habit of pulling it out the bag when it comes to staging, so all hope is not lost.
Angus: Between Natalia’s voice and that gorgeous chorus, I absolutely adore this song. They’re already enough to make me ignore any issues I might have had with the underwhelming lyrics of the track, and considering the verses are strong melodically as well I always have a great (and sometimes emotional, that’s how impactful the chorus is for me) time listening to this song. With the proper staging, this could do very well at Eurovision.

Moldova’s Eurovision Journey
Moldova is relatively new to the Eurovision Song Contest, joining in 2005. Their debut entry, Zdob și Zdub, finished in 6th place, which had remained their highest scoring entry up until 2017. This was thanks to the Sunstroke Project performing ‘Hey Mamma’, finishing in 3rd place. At the close of voting, Moldova received 374 points.
In 2023, Pasha came back to the Eurovision stage to represent Moldova at the Contest in Liverpool. Performing his song “Soarele și luna”, Moldova qualified for the final, finishing in 5th place. Following the jury and televote points in the final, Moldova received 96 points, finishing in 18th place. Of the 96 points, 20 were given by the jury, while the remaining 76 is given by the televote.
