As the Eurovision 2025 season is in full swing, more and more countries announce their participation. This time, its Australia’s turn to confirm they will be joining in Basel, and will be marking their 10th appearance in the competition.
Australia’s selection method for Basel is still to be confirmed
SBS’ participation was revealed after it revealed its so-called “Upfronts” for the upcoming year. No information has been offered yet on how the competing artist or song will be chosen. This, however, will mark a landmark participation for SBS, as it will be Australia’s 10th participation in the contest.
Since their debut in the competition, they have used various selection methods in selecting their entry. In 2024, Australia opted to internally select Electric Fields to represent them in Malmö with “One Milkali (One Blood)” which unfortunately did not advance to the final.
2023 was Australia’s last definite participation in the contest. In 2018, the EBU allowed SBS to participate for the past five years. The EBU is yet to confirm if Australia will be able to continue to participate after next year’s contest.
Australia’s Eurovision journey
The most recent country to debut into the Eurovision Song Contest, Australia debuted in 2015. Guy Sebastian represented the land down under with his entry “Tonight Again” in Vienna, where they placed 5th. Since their debut, they have participated every single year of the competition.
Australia internally selected Electric Fields to represent them in 2024 with the song “One Milkali (One Blood)”. The band ultimately failed to reach the Grand Final, placing eleventh in the first semifinal with 41 televote points.
