What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from EMA 2025?
Rory (ZveN): Zven is offering something COMPELTELY different to what we’re used to as Eurovision fans – and instead is showing us a completely wild experience – which, for Slovenia, is kinda shocking. This throws up memories of Inuit throat singing and a kind of connection to nature that really Eurovision has never seen before. Slovenia is on a high now, why not try something new?
Daniel (Grace): Trine’s exact type of sad girl singer-songwriter indie is one of my biggest musical pleasures, this is definitely the type of music you could find me listening to outside of the Eurovision sphere. I do think it’s fairly messy in parts in parts, and could do with an extra polish here and there, but there’s still plenty to love here. I’m curious to see what her other music is like because I think there’ll be some things for me to enjoy there!
Shiloh (How Much Time Do We Have Left): I know I don’t just speak for myself when I say this is not what we were expecting from Klemen. I knew him best from his parody videos, so I was stunned by this evocative, deeply personal ballad. It’s well-written, but more than that, it’s moving and intimate. It’s that sincere touch that makes “How Much Time Do We Have Left” a cut above this year’s other EMA entries.
What is EMA?
EMA has been integral to Slovenia’s Eurovision journey, having been used as its national selection for 25 of its 28 appearances. First introduced for Slovenia’s third Eurovision participation in 1996, the format has been used consistently until 2021, when EMA 2020 winner Ana Soklič reprised her role following the cancellation of the 2020 contest. The contest was abruptly cancelled in 2023 following Joker Out’s internal selection for Liverpool. The contest was set to return in 2024 but was cancelled prior to the announcement of participants as Raiven was internally selected.
Slovenia’s Eurovision Journey
In 1993, Slovenia made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest with 1X Band and the song “Tih deževen dan”, which placed 22nd. Since their debut, they have participated 28 times, qualifying for the Grand Final in 16.
Slovenia’s recent Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Raiven, who sang the song “Veronika”. Performing at the first semi-final, Raiven placed 9th, therefore qualifying for the final for the second consecutive time. At the final, Slovenia finished in 23rd place, receiving 27 points. Of these, 15 came from the jury and 12 from the televote.
