The race to host Eurovision 2027 is beginning to take shape, with Sofia becoming the first city to publicly outline its plans. The Bulgarian capital is the first candidate to reveal what its bid would look like if selected. If successful, Sofia would host Eurovision for the first time.
Sofia unveils host city vision
Speaking to reporters, Sofia’s Deputy Mayor for Culture and Tourism, Irina Dakova, told the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) the city has the “capacity, infrastructure and momentum” needed to stage Eurovision.
Under the proposal, Arena Sofia would host the live shows. Nearby Sofia Tech Park would provide facilities for delegations and accredited media. The National Palace of Culture (NDK) would host both the Eurovision Village and the traditional Turquoise Carpet ceremony. Meanwhile, Toplocentrala would serve as the city’s EuroClub venue.
Dakova also pointed to Sofia’s transport network, green policies and experience hosting major international events. She highlighted the 2015 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, Bulgaria’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and stages of the Giro d’Italia as examples.
The story of Eurovision 2027 so far
The journey to the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest kicked off immediately following DARA’s win in Vienna, when Bulgaria’s BNT accepted the rights to host the 71st edition of the contest. Currently, very little is known about the plans for next year’s Contest, but four cities have expressed their interest in hosting Eurovision 2027, and they are Burgas, Plovdiv, Sofia and Varna.
As for the organisation of the competition, the Bulgarian government stepped in to create an organising committee, which was revealed at the end of May 2026, with further details about next year’s competition to be revealed in due course.
