As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Spain, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “Esa Diva” by Melody.

Our thoughts on “Esa Diva”

In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “Esa Diva”

What did the other team members think of “Esa Diva”?

Molly: The performance itself is full of spectacle which can either work very well or very bad for this performance. I feel like she ends up doing a flip with the help of her dancers that one works because it fits with the timing of the song however some of them like her spinning her hair seem fun but out of place for me. The song is a fun Spanish party anthem which is love.

The song comes together, and I feel like the revamp helped perfect it. However, I tend to love the revamped version more than I do the original, so I’m interested to see what else they will perfect when it comes to translating this performance over to Basel. Melody has the vocals and stage presence to pull this off. However, I feel like they need to tone down how many spectacles they throw at the performance.

Kittens: I wasn’t sold on this at all on the original recording, but kinda came round to it within the performance, and now with the revamp I’m kind of going off it again. I am finding the whole thing just a bit messy – the song has just got too much going on. I will say is that Melody is a stellar performer, and can definitely carry the song through, which considering it’s a reasonably difficult song to perform even just vocally, is quite an achievement. But I feel a bit conflicted about the song itself – it feels a bit directionless and even moreso with the revamp – instead of tightening things up, it feels like they put too much extra on. It will still move me on a dancefloor, but I’m not sure it has quite enough punch to succeed at Eurovision itself.

Daniel: This might just be our last place for the year, because I genuinely don’t see where it would get any meaningful support from. To me it feels really out of date, and the revamp really didn’t help fix that in any way at all. Melody is by all means a great performer but sadly I think this can only be elevated so far by that.

Spain’s Eurovision Journey

Spain debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 with Conchita Bautista’s “Estando Contigo”. The country earned its first win in 1968 with Massiel’s “La La La”, and won again in 1969 with Salome’s “Vivo Cantando” in an infamous four-way tie. Although they have yet to win again, Spain earned several 2nd place finishes, most famously with Mocedades’ “Eres tu” in 1973 and Anabel Conde’s “Vuelve conmigo” in 1996.

In 2024, Spain selected Nebulossa. As part of the Big 5, Nebulossa did not need to qualify to the Grand Final from the semi-finals. At the close of voting, their song “ZORRA” finished 22nd, with a total of 30 points. Of these, 19 points came from the jury, whilst 11 came from the televote.
