๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฎ Liechtenstein explains ongoing absence from Eurovision

Despite years of speculation and hopes from fans, Liechtenstein will not be making its debut at Eurovision 2026.

Why Liechtenstein is not joining Eurovision

In a recent interview, Prime Minister Sabine Mona Haas addressed the matter directly, clarifying that while the idea of joining Eurovision is often discussed, practical limitations make participation currently unfeasible.

One of the primary reasons for Liechtensteinโ€™s ongoing absence is the lack of a suitable venue. The country does not currently have an indoor arena with a capacity of at least 3,000 spectators, which is a requirement for hosting national selections or staging large-scale broadcasts associated with Eurovision participation.

She also cited the small size of the country, both in terms of population and media infrastructure, as a barrier. In the past, the broadcaster 1FLTV attempted to pursue EBU membership, which is a necessary step for participation. However, limited funding and the absence of a fully public broadcaster compliant with EBU standards made progress difficult.

Also, the now-defunct Radio Liechtenstein had shown interest in becoming an EBU member, but was ultimately shut down. As of now, Liechtenstein does not have an active broadcaster eligible to join the EBU, which remains a non-negotiable prerequisite for entering the contest.

Liechtensteinโ€™s (attempted) Eurovision Journey

Liechtenstein is one of just two recognised European nations (alongside the Vatican City) that have never participated in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Despite not having a broadcaster at the time, Liechtenstein attempted to participate in Eurovision once before. In 1976, they attempted to take part in the contest with the song โ€œLittle Cowboyโ€ sung by Biggi Bachman; however, they were not allowed to participate due to not having a broadcaster to represent them.
