We ranked the songs taking part in the final, using a 1-12 ranking. 1 being our favourite, 12 being our least favourite song. We then calculated the average of all our rankings.

3rd. Kautkaili – “Te un tagad” (5.40):

2nd. Elpo – “Blakus” (3.40):

1st. Honey Blue – “Blue Disco” (3.20):

What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from Supernova?

Kittens (Blue Disco): I might not be the biggest supernova fan around these parts but Blue Disco has caught my attention, if nothing else for that intoxicating little guitar riff, which really kicks it into another gear. It feels like it should be playing at a cute jazz club or beach bar while you have a nice cocktail. While I’m far from certain about anything predictions-wise here, I just think it’s a nice vibe and very good to chill with.

Samantha (Te Un Tagad): This song has reminded me why I choose to suffer through Supernova every year because in amongst all the mediocre songs there are some real gems like this one. It’s got a cool kind of retro vibe to it and whilst it’s not your typical Eurovision song I think it could work in the ESC sphere if staged well. The chorus is really catchy and all the little note changes are fun touches.

Rory (Elpo): Having watched Supernova throughout the years, I’ve seen Latvian artists really lean into sounds that are fresh, experimental and show off a fantastic sense of what a good song is. “Blakus” is one those amazing songs. It’s so fresh, it’s really in your face but something that is really streamable, and with deep lyrics too, this is bound to stand out on the night. I can’t wait to see what the duo bring to the stage.

And what were the teams thoughts on the national final as a whole?

George: Overall : I’ve never really been a fan of Supernova, and this year does nothing to change my mind. The last time I genuinely liked a significant number of songs was back when Aminata won. This time around, I only have two favourites, and even those are clearly biased picks. Overall, the quality feels very much like Latvia being Latvia.

What is Supernova?

With the exception of 2021, where Samanta Tina was internally reselected following the cancellation of the 2020 contest, Latvia has always used a national final to select its Eurovision representative. Since 2015, this has been “Supernova”. In recent years, Supernova has usually been made up of two shows, a semi-final and a final. In recent years, around 15 artists have taken part in the semi-final with around 10 artists advancing to the final. The final results of Supernova consist of a combination of a jury vote and the televote, at a 50-50% split.

Latvia’s Eurovision Journey

Latvia made their Eurovision debut in 2000, finishing 3rd with “My Star” by Brainstorm. They have performed at every contest since and managed to win in 2002. Marie N sang “I Wanna,” scoring 176 points and bringing Eurovision to Riga in the process. Latvia also managed to finish in the top 10 two more times, in 2005 and 2015.

Latvia’s most recent entry on the Eurovision stage was Tautumeitas, who performed “Bur man laimi”. Latvia successfully qualified from the second semi-final for the second year in a row. In the Grand Final, Tautumeitas finished in 13th place with 158 points. Of these points, 42 were from the public vote, and 116 were from the national juries.
