Icelandic singer and Eurovision 1995 representative Björgvin Halldórsson has passed away, just days before his 75th birthday. Icelandic music icon Björgvin Halldórsson has died at the age of 74, marking the loss of one of the country’s most influential performers.
A Eurovision legacy
Halldórsson represented Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 1995 in Dublin with the song “Núna”, finishing 15th in the final. His Eurovision journey, however, extended far beyond that appearance. He attempted to represent Iceland multiple times through the national selection process during the late 1980s and early 1990s, becoming a familiar and respected figure within the country’s Eurovision scene.
In 2017, his Eurovision legacy continued through his daughter, Svala, who represented Iceland in Kyiv with Halldórsson himself serving as the Icelandic spokesperson that year.
A defining figure in Icelandic music
Born in Hafnarfjörður in 1951, Halldórsson began his career at a young age and quickly rose to prominence, being named “Popstar of the Year” in 1969. Over the decades, he became one of Iceland’s most recognisable voices, performing with numerous bands and building a catalogue of songs that are still considered classics in the country today. His influence extended beyond performance, shaping Iceland’s music scene across generations and earning him recognition as one of the nation’s most beloved artists.
