🇭🇺 Péter Magyar looking for ways to bring Hungary back to Eurovision

Péter Magyar - who said he will help to try and bring Hungary back to Eurovision

Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, has said he is going to instruct his government to find ways to bring Hungary back to Eurovision. The country last took part in 2019.

Péter Magyar says not participation “makes no sense”

Speaking to Austrian broadcaster ORF‘s main news show Zeit im Bild, Péter Magyar was asked about how whether he would try to bring Hungary back to the competition. He replied:

To be honest, it’s not up to the Hungarian Prime Minister. It’s not my decision whether Hungary will participate again in this Contest.

But I have received many letters and pleas from the younger generation to [send] Hungary to this competition. So I will instruct the minister or State Secretary of Culture to scrunitise opportunities to come back to Eurovision. I hope so, there is no sense not to participate in such a contest.

After winning the Hungarian parliamentary elections in April, Péter Magyar has vowed to reduce the state’s influence on public broadcasting media. Duna TV, part of the Hungarian media conglomerate MTVA, is now having its systems overhauled in order to remove political influence from the government.

Magyar has previously said he would investigate opportunities for Hungary to return to Eurovision, responding to questions from voters ahead of the election saying he would find a way to help the country come back. Hungary last took part in 2019, but pulled out – with insiders close to the station saying the competition was “too gay” for Hungary.

Hungary’s Eurovision journey

Hungary tried to make their debut at Eurovision in 1993, but did not make it past the qualification round, but a year later, they made their debut Friderika and the entry “Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet?”, which placed 4th. Since then, Hungary has competed on 17 occassion, 14 of which saw them qualify for the final.

The country’s recent participation was in 2019, where Joci Pápai participated with “Az én apám”, which placed 12th in the Semi-Final. Since then, Hungary has not participated in the competition.
