Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne has confirmed that 217 submissions have been made to take part in its national selection for Eurovision 2027, Vidbir 2027.
Vidbir 2027 bringing back previous acts
In a press release, Suspilne confirmed that 217 submissions had been made by a total of 201 different artists. Of these, a total of 153 acts were solo, and 48 were bands. Suspilne added that eight acts who had previously competed in Vidbir had submitted a song. It also confirmed it had received applications from artists from abroad – including the UK, the Netherlands, Czechia and Norway.
Suspilne later confirmed that a longlist is being drafted as the number of competing acts is whittled down. No information has been given as to how many acts will make it onto the longlist, but confirmed that all acts that make it through to the second stage will be offered a contract by Suspilne before November 24th.
The format of Vidbir 2027 will remain relatively unchanged, with Ukrainians being able to choose one act that did not automatically make it to the final from the longlist by online voting. Speaking on the overall quality of songs, music producer Dmitry Shurov said:
Against the backdrop of AI-generated backing vocals and orchestras, the songs, to which numerous human musicians had a hand, sounded even more original. At the longlist stage, we will together refine the songs so that they meet the level and rules of the Eurovision grand final.
In general, in a situation of great risks, uncertainty, market decline, lack of light and basic conditions, psychological exhaustion, in which we have all been for five years, I consider the level of applications to be quite high. Many video performances sent by musicians in applications begin with the words “there is no light, so sorry, I’m filming near a lamppost”. I am sincerely grateful to all the musicians who gathered their will and spirit into a fist and created music so that Ukrainians, as always, could choose their favorite musical representative in February 2027.
Meanwhile Head of Delegation Oksana Skybinska suggested the longlist could be extended, saying:
We are grateful to the artists who, even in the darkest times, create quality music and strive to become the voice of Ukraine on the big international stage. This National Selection will open up new names for Ukrainians and will become a new page in the musical biography of already familiar artists. Applications are still being processed, but there is already a feeling that the longlist will need to be expanded so that more diverse Ukrainian songs can be heard first at the auditions and then in the playlists of Ukrainians.
Vidbir 2027 will be held in February 2027, but no official date has been given.
