As time progresses, more and more countries reveal if whether or not they will be participating in the 2021 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Another country that would not be present for this year’s competition is Belgium; which confirmed to Eurofestivales that they will not be participating in this year’s competition.

Speaking to Eurofestivales, the Director-General of RTBF Sandrine Roustan mentioned that “the event is definitely too expensive for us.” It was also revealed that other sources of funding were considered, but not pursued due to lack of interest. Belgium’s non-participation will see them miss the competition for the 9th year in a row. Belgium has not participated since 2012, when the contest took place in Amsterdam.

What we currently know about the 2021 Junior Eurovision Song Contest

After winning the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2020, it wasn’t long until it was revealed that the winning host nation; France, will be hosting the 2021 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. In May 2021, it was revealed that Paris will be hosting this year’s competition in La Seine Musicale on December 19.

At the time of writing, the following countries have confirmed their participation in this year’s competition

  • France – Host Nation
  • Georgia
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • The Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Russia
  • Ukraine

Belgium’s Junior Eurovision Journey

In 2003, Belgium was one of the countries that participated in the inaugural edition of the competition, where they were represented by X!NK with the song “De vriendschapsband”, which placed 6th. Since their debut, they have participated ten times, with their best result in 2009 (4th). Their latest attempt was in 2012, when Fabian represented them with the song “Abracadabra”, which placed 5th.
