As the UK prepares to welcome thousands of fans to Liverpool in May, broadcaster BBC reunited some of the country’s biggest Eurovision stars for Comic Relief.
Coming together for Comic Relief
Comic Relief is a charity event, traditionally broadcast on the BBC raising money to fight against poverty. The event involves local initiatives to help communities fundraise for those in need. The charity is most well-known for Red Nose Day, which involves a telethon filled with star-studded guests. These guests often are involved in comedic sketches to encourage donations.
For this year’s Comic Relief, three stars of the Contest in the UK have joined forces to call on donations. Sam Ryder, who finished second in Turin last year, will be joined by Lulu, co-winner of Eurovision 1969 and commentator Graham Norton. Norton is also confirmed to be one of the hosts for this year’s final in Liverpool on May 13th.
The sketch the trio acts in will show celebrities auditioning to represent the UK at the Contest in Liverpool. Some of the artists auditioning include Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet and The Fizz, who won Eurovision in 1981. Other famous faces appearing will include comedian Miranda Hart, actor Jamie Dornan and presenter Dermot O’Leary.
Viewers in the United Kingdom can watch Comic Relief on BBC One from 7pm GMT tonight (Friday, 17th March). Two tickets for the final of the Contest will also be given away during the show.
United Kingdom’s Eurovision journey
Despite a recent slump in results, the UK is one of the most successful countries at the Eurovision Song Contest. Debuting at the second edition ever of the Contest in 1957, the United Kingdom has won the competition on five separate occasions. The most recent win for the UK was in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves, singing βLove Shine A Lightβ. The UK also holds the record for the number of second place finishes β currently at 16.
In 2022, the UK was represented by Sam Ryder with his song βSPACE MANβ. The performance managed to impress juries and televoters, and the UK finished in second place with 466 points, their best placing since 1998.
