After France’s win in this year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest, countries are now starting to announce if they will be in next year’s competition or not. One of those countries we won’t see is Denmark, which has revealed they won’t be participating in 2024.
“We wish to keep the competition close to us and our core values without participating in the international competition”
The news of Denmark’s non-participation at Junior Eurovision 2024, was reported by Eurofestivales. When asked if the broadcaster (DR) reviews participation annually, Mrs. Marlene Boel, the head of the children’s channel on DR has the following to say:
We are very involved in the competition for our young MGP audience. However, we have decided to analyze the competition and its development in the coming years, and we wish to keep the competition close to us and our core values without participating in the international competition
Mrs. Marlene Boel on participating at Junior Eurovision
Speaking about the changes and safeguarding policies they have put in place, Mrs. Boel had the following comment:
We know that they have developed the European competition over the years, but in this case, we still prefer not to participate in the European version
Denmark’s non-participation would see them miss out on the competition, for the nineteenth year in a row. Denmark has not participated in the competition since 2005 when the competition took place in Haaslet.
Denmark’s Junior Eurovision Journey
The Scandinavian nation was the home of the inaugural edition of the competition in 2003, where they were represented by Anne Gadegaard with the song “Arabiens drøm”, which placed 5th. They participated until 2005, which saw them represented by Nicolai and the song “Shake Shake Shake”, which ended up as Denmark’s best result in the competition to date.
