🇮🇸 OGAE Iceland calls on RÚV to withdraw from Eurovision 2024 if Israel competes

Diljá performed Power for Iceland at the Second Semi-Final at Liverpool Arena

OGAE Iceland (FÁSES) is the latest group to call on Icelandic broadcaster RÚV to withdraw from Eurovision 2024, if Israel is competing.

News follows after FTT called on RÚV’s withdrawal

As reported by RÚV, it was revealed that out of the 238 members who voted, 169 voted in favour of non-participation, whilst 55 voted against. It is not just OGAE Iceland who have called for Iceland to not participate in Malmö if Israel will be participating. A petition in Iceland’s Radio House, which was conducted by FTT has gathered over 9,000 signatures, whilst a survey conducted by Prósent from December 17 to 21 saw the majority of participants say Israel should be denied participation in Malmö.

Iceland’s Eurovision journey

Iceland made its debut on the Eurovision stage in 1986, finishing 16th with the song “Gleðibankinn” (Bank of Fun) by ICY. In their 35 appearances, Iceland has finished in top 10 an impressive 7 times. Their best result to date is second place, which they have achieved twice. The first time was in 1999, where Selma Björnsdóttir received 146 points for her performance of “All Out of Luck”. The second time was in 2009, with Yohanna singing “Is It True” and receiving 218 points.

Iceland’s most recent representative on the Eurovision stage was Diljá, singing “Power” in Liverpool. At the close of the voting, Diljá finished 11th in the semi-final with 44 points from the televote, just missing out on qualifying to the final.
