Following their return to the Eurovision final in 2025, Malta has confirmed that it will be competing in Eurovision 2026.
Malta working on songwriting camp
After Miriana Conte’s success in reaching the final in Basel, broadcaster PBS has announced it will be taking part in the 70th edition of the Contest in Austria.
Plans are already in motion to prepare for the next edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest (MESC). As part of this, a songwriting camp – named the Malta Eurovision Music Exchange – has been set up for the third year in a row. The camp will help connect international songwriters with local artists ahead of the national final next season.
A number of well-known songwriters from Malta and abroad have been confirmed to take part in the camp. Among these is Maltese songwriter Muxu, known for writing “SERVING”, as well as the likes of Linnea Deb, Melanie Wehbe and Sarah Bonnici – who represented Malta in 2024.
Speaking on the decision to launch the camp again, a PBS spokesperson said:
Miriana and the team did such a great job! She created a lot of buzz around Malta and brought us back to the finals. We’re confident more eyes will be on MESC next year, which can only benefit our artists.
The reaction from both the Maltese public and international fans has been overwhelming. It’s motivated us to raise the bar further and make MESC even more accessible to a global audience. While we can’t reveal too much just yet, we’re focused on showcasing Maltese talent far beyond our shores.
The spokesperson added that Malta is hoping to win next year’s Contest, as well as helping to promote Maltese artists on an international stage.
Malta’s Eurovision journey
Malta made its Eurovision debut in 1971, with Joe Grech performing “Marija I-Maltija” (Maria the Maltese Lass), finishing 18th with 52 points. Malta did not participate in Eurovision from 1975 until 1991, when they returned with the song “Could It Be” by Paul Giordimaina and Georgina, finishing 12th with 32 points. Since then, Malta has been at every Eurovision and finished in the top 10 an impressive 12 times. Their best result is second place, which they’ve achieved twice. The first time was in 2002, when Ira Losco sang “7th Wonder,” and the second time in 2005 with Chiara’s “Angel.”
Miriana Conte represented Malta in 2025 with her song “Serving”, previously known as “Kant”. Competing in the second semi-final, Malta qualified – ending their three-year long non-qualification streak. Miriana would eventually finish in 17th place, earning a total of 91 points. Of these, 83 came from the juries, while just 8 came from televoters.
